Quick answer: For a dent with intact paint, paintless dent repair (PDR) at Pro Auto Design starts at $95 to $150 for a door ding and tops out around $250 to $450 for a large dent, while a body shop quote for the same dent often runs several hundred dollars because it includes filler, primer, and repainting. PDR is also usually finished the same day, and it leaves your original factory paint in place.
If a body shop quote for a dent felt high, there is a structural reason, and there is a cheaper option. Here are the real numbers.
Why Does Traditional Bodywork Cost More?
A body shop repairs a dent in stages: fill it with body filler, sand it smooth, prime it, match the color and repaint it, then clear-coat and buff. Each stage adds labor and materials, and the car often stays in the shop for several days while the paint cures.
What Does PDR Skip Entirely?
A technician reaches behind the panel with rods and works the metal back to its original shape, so the paint is never disturbed.

How Much Does PDR Cost at Pro Auto Design?
PDR is priced per dent by size, depth, and how well we can reach the back of the panel. These are our current prices:
DamagePrice per dentDoor ding, up to the size of a quarter$95 to $150Medium dent, up to the size of a golf ball$150 to $250Large dent or shallow crease, up to the size of a fist, paint unbroken$250 to $450Each extra dent on the same panel, worked in the same visitFrom $50
Dents on a body line or near a panel edge sit higher in the band. For an exact number, send a photo of the dent with a reflection running across it, and we will quote you before you drive over.
What Changes the Price of a PDR Repair?
Four things move a quote up or down within the bands above:
Size. A quarter-size ding costs less than a fist-size dent.
Depth. A shallow dent lifts out faster than a deep one.
Access. Dents with open space behind the panel are easier to reach than dents near a brace or edge.
Number of dents. Extra dents on the same panel start at $50 each when they are worked in the same visit.
How Does a PDR Repair Actually Work?
We read the dent. A line board across the panel shows the true shape of the damage in the reflection.
We work the metal back. Rods go in behind the panel and push the metal up in small steps, checking the reflection after each pass.
We check it in the light. The finished panel is inspected under the same reflection that showed the dent, and if it is not right, it is not finished.
How Much Could You Actually Save?
Take a door ding. If a body shop quotes $500 for it (an example, not a real quote), PDR at $95 to $150 would save you about $350 to $405, and you would likely have the car back the same day. Your own savings depend on the quote you received, so bring it with you and compare.
Does PDR Protect Your Car’s Value Better?
Often, yes. A repainted panel can show up on a paint depth gauge, and it is one of the first things an appraiser checks on a trade-in. A panel with its original factory paint reads as untouched, even when a repaint looks fine to the eye.
When Is Traditional Bodywork Still Necessary?
PDR is not right for every dent. Plan on a body shop if:
The paint is cracked, chipped, or scraped through to primer.
The metal has been stretched or torn.
The dent sits sharply on a body line where there is no access from behind.
We tell you which category your dent falls into before you pay for anything, and we point you to a body shop if that is the better answer.
What Should You Ask Before Approving Any Dent Repair?
Whether you choose PDR or a body shop, get these answers first:
Is the paint intact? If it is, ask whether PDR is an option.
Is the quote itemized and in writing? California’s Bill of Rights says you are entitled to one.
How many days will the car be gone?
Will any panel be repainted? A repainted panel changes your car’s original finish for good.
Quick Answers About PDR Pricing
If insurance is involved, does the cost difference matter? Yes, because a PDR repair for one or two dings can cost less than a typical $500 or $1,000 deductible, so you may not need a claim at all. If you do file, California’s Auto Body Repair Consumer Bill of Rights says you can choose your repair shop and get an itemized written estimate.
Do you charge for an estimate? No. Estimates are free, and you can send a photo or bring the car by our Fulton Ave shop.
Can PDR fix several dents in one visit? Yes. Extra dents on the same panel start at $50 each when they are worked in the same visit.
How long does PDR take? Most repairs are finished the same day, depending on the size, depth, and number of dents.
