Davis has one of the highest rates of electric vehicle ownership in California, and on an EV a hot cabin is not just uncomfortable, it is range. What the Causeway and the valley sun do to a Davis car
Davis is unusual among the cities we serve because people here drive less, not more. It is a bike town by design, so a car in North Davis or Wildhorse often sits in the same open space for three or four days between trips. That changes the problem. 1972 Fulton Ave, Sacramento, CA 95825. On Fulton Ave, minutes from Arden-Arcade and Cal Expo. Every install happens in our climate-controlled bay, so the drive from Davis is the only part you have to plan.
About twenty-five minutes: I-80 east over the Causeway, onto the Capital City Freeway and off at Fulton Ave. The install is the longer half. Most full-vehicle tint jobs run two to three hours, and a ceramic coating takes longer than that because the paint is washed, decontaminated and prepped first. We give you the honest number on the phone so you can decide whether to wait or drop the car.
It helps, and the reason is straightforward. The biggest climate load an electric car carries is pulling a cabin back down from the 120° to 140° it reaches sitting in an open Davis lot. Ceramic film cuts how much of that heat gets in, so the car starts cooler and the air conditioning draws less from the battery. Nobody should promise you a fixed percentage, because it depends on the car and the day, but on a vehicle that parks outside all summer it is one of the few worthwhile things you can add.
It stops the damage, not the bugs. Insect residue is acidic, and what ruins paint is it baking on for a day or two and etching the clear coat. A coating gives it a hard, slick surface it cannot bond to, so it comes off with a rinse rather than scrubbing. The front bumper and the leading edge of the bonnet are where Davis cars show this first.
Lighter on the front doors than most people hope, and as dark as you like behind them. California allows only clear, colourless film on the front side windows, passing 88% of light on its own and leaving glass plus film at 70% VLT or above. We meter your factory glass before anything goes on and issue the CVC 26708 certificate the code requires you to carry. The window tinting page sets the rule out in full.
That is the strongest case for it, not the weakest. Heat damage is a function of time in the sun, not miles driven, so the car that sits in the same open space in Wildhorse for four days takes more of it than a commuter car that is moving. Tint is what stops the dashboard cracking and the seats fading while the car does nothing at all.
